Why Restarting Your Windows PC Matters (And No, Shutting Down Isn’t the Same Thing)

Here's a surprising fact: if you're using Windows 10 or Windows 11, shutting down your PC may not actually shut it down.

Thanks to a feature called Fast Startup, many computers preserve part of Windows' system state between shutdowns. That's great for boot speed, but it also explains why IT professionals so often recommend a restart when something goes wrong.

We’ve all been there. Your computer starts lagging, an app freezes, or your internet randomly drops. You reach out to IT, or that one tech-savvy friend, and they immediately hit you with the ultimate cliché:

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

It sounds lazy, but it’s actually the closest thing to a magic wand in the tech world. However, there’s a massive catch that most Windows users completely miss: In modern versions of Windows, "Shut Down" and "Restart" do two completely different things.

Here is the breakdown of why a true restart is essential, how often you should do it, and why your daily shutdown routine might not actually be cleaning up your PC.

The Big Secret:

Since Windows 10 (and continuing into Windows 11), Microsoft has used a feature called Fast Startup.

According to Microsoft, Fast Startup combines elements of a traditional shutdown and hibernation to reduce boot times. 

When you click Shut Down, Windows doesn't actually close everything out and start fresh next time. Instead, it closes your applications, logs out your user session, and then takes a snapshot of your deep system state (aka the Windows Kernel and drivers) and saves it to your hard drive, kind of like a deep sleep (a process called hibernation).

When you turn your PC back on, Windows loads that snapshot back into your RAM (system memory). This makes your computer boot up incredibly fast, but it also means some system glitches, bloated temporary files, or leaked memory from your last session are reloaded right back into your active system.

What happens during a Restart?

When you click Restart, Windows bypasses Fast Startup entirely. It performs a full Windows boot cycle, reinitialising the kernel, drivers, and system services from a clean state .

How to check your PC's true "Up Time":

Want to see how long your computer has actually been running? Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Performance tab, and look at Up time. You might be shocked to see your PC has been "running" for 14 days straight, even if you shut it down every night!

Keep in mind that uptime reflects how long the Windows kernel has been running. If Fast Startup is enabled, shutting down and powering back on may not reset the uptime counter. 

So why bother with Fast Startup at all?

Fast Startup isn't a bad feature. For many users (mainly those with older hardware), it provides faster boot times with no noticeable downsides. The issue is that when troubleshooting performance or stability problems, a Restart is often much more effective than a standard Shutdown. 

Why Your PC Craves a Fresh Start

Think of your computer's RAM (Random Access Memory) like a physical desk. As you work throughout the day, you pull out files, tools, and notebooks.

Over time, applications, drivers, browser tabs, and background services can consume system resources. In some cases, poorly behaved software doesn't always clean up after itself perfectly - this is called a memory leak. Over time, your "desk" gets cluttered with leftover junk, leaving you less room to actually get work done.

Modern versions of Windows are far more stable than they were a decade ago. Many computers can run for weeks or even months without requiring a restart. However, periodic restarts remain one of the simplest ways to clear transient issues and ensure updates are properly installed. 

A true Restart is like sweeping everything off the desk and wiping it down with a microfiber cloth. Here is what it achieves:

  • Flushes the RAM: Clears out cached data and memory leaks, instantly restoring snappiness.

  • Applies Critical Updates: Windows updates and driver installations require a clean reboot to replace core files that are actively in use.

  • Fixes Hardware and Software Glitches: Frees up frozen background processes, clears network stack errors, and resets misbehaving drivers.

How Often Should You Restart Your Windows PC?

There is no one-size-fits-all rule, but a great benchmark for the average user is at least once a week.

Every 2–3 Days

Power users, heavy gamers, video editors.

Demanding software leaves heavy footprints in your RAM. Frequent restarts keep performance at its peak.

Once a Week

Standard office workers, students, casual browsers.

Strikes the perfect balance between convenience and system health. Pick a day (like Friday afternoon) to make it a habit.

Immediately

Anyone experiencing lag, app crashes, or weird Wi-Fi issues.

The ultimate first-line defense before spending hours troubleshooting.

After Updates

Everyone

Ensures security patches, driver updates, and system changes are fully applied. 

How to Get a "True" Fresh Start

Just use Restart: Make it a habit to click Restart instead of Shut Down at least once a week. 

If however you prefer using the "Shut Down" button at night but want the benefits of a full system refresh, you have two options:

  1. The Shift-Click Trick: Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard while clicking Shut Down in the Start Menu. This forces Windows to perform a full, old-school shutdown, bypassing Fast Startup entirely.

  2. Disable Fast Startup: If you have a fast modern Solid State Drive (SSD), Fast Startup only saves you a couple of seconds anyway. You can disable it permanently by going to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, clicking Change settings that are currently unavailable, and unchecking Turn on fast startup.

The Bottom Line

The next time your Windows PC feels sluggish, crashes unexpectedly, or starts behaving strangely, don't assume a shutdown will solve the problem. In many cases, a proper Restart is the fastest way to clear temporary issues, apply pending updates, and give Windows a genuinely fresh start.
